What CKD and SKD actually mean

CKD means Completely Knocked Down: the vehicle is supplied as separated parts for substantial local assembly. A typical CKD scope may include the frame, fork, wheels, motor, controller, wiring harness, body panels, fasteners and other components packed separately.

SKD means Semi Knocked Down: the factory completes more of the vehicle before shipment, so the local team performs fewer assembly steps. For example, the rolling chassis or major assemblies may arrive pre-assembled while final fitting, inspection and preparation are completed locally.

The exact parts scope is not universal. Never assume that every supplier's “CKD” or “SKD” package contains the same items; request a parts list and packing plan for the exact model.

Which route fits your business?

Choose SKD when your team needs a simpler local assembly process, has limited workshop capability, or wants to enter the market quickly. Choose CKD when you have a more capable assembly operation and need a higher level of local assembly.

The decision is not only about the shipping price. Compare local labour, tools, quality-control capability, available parts, assembly time and the destination market's customs and product requirements. Ask for a quote that can be compared

Send the same brief to every supplier: model, motor, battery, target quantity, destination port and whether you want CKD or SKD. Then ask each supplier to state:

• the complete parts scope and what arrives pre-assembled;
• the packing method, carton count and 40HQ loading quantity;
• the assembly tools, instructions and inspection steps required locally;
• the FOB port, production lead time and any spare-parts allocation.

This prevents a low headline price from hiding missing components, different batteries or a less practical packing route.

Battery, documents and receiving checklist

Battery transport must be agreed before booking. Lithium-battery documents, packing instructions and carrier acceptance vary by battery configuration and route; coordinate the specific shipment with the battery supplier and freight forwarder.

Before shipment, reconcile the approved configuration, parts list, carton marks, packing list, gross weight and commercial invoice. Ask for packing or loading photos when useful, and make sure the local receiving team has the assembly instructions before the container arrives.
